Flag of Akşehir - Image by Jens Pattke, 3 October 2012
The flag of Akşehir (photo) is white with the municipality's emblem in the middle. "AKŞEHİR BELEDİYESİ" means "Akşehir Municipality".
The emblem pictures Nasreddin Hoca, a Seljuk satirical Sufi figure, very popular in the Islamic world, who lived in the 13th century and is considered as a folk philosopher and a wise man, remembered for his funny stories and anecdotes.
Akşehir, where it is believed that the tomb of Nasreddin Hoca is, celebrates the International Nasr Nasreddin Hoca Festival every year between 5 and 10 July.
The story associated with the emblem of Akşehir (text) says that Nasruddin once wanted to climb up on a donkey, but first put his right foot in the stirrups. When he got on the donkey, his face turned towards the tail. People asked him: "Why did you get turned upside down?" He replied: "I have not gone awry, but the donkey turned upside down" (Isaković, 1987: 34).
