The emblem features the clock tower, located in the middle of the Town Hall square, offerred in 1900 by the German Emperor Wilhelm II. "İZMİR BÜYÜKŞEHİR BELEDİYESİ" means "İzmir Metropolitan Municipality".

The Ege University (Ege Üniversitesi), established in 1955, is located in İzmir with several branches. It is one of the most important public universities in Turkey, with more than 50,000 students (2011).
The flag of the Ege University is white with the university's emblem in its centre. The emblem displays light blue waves superimposed by a dark blue letter "e". The university's name and foundation year are written in white on the emblem's border.
