The settlement which is the seat and nameske of this commune used to be a
village, and was upgraded to town status in 2001, after its coat of arms and
flag was fisrt adopted. The 2004 law issued the trivial
changes — the previous flag was plain white, with
a three-towered coat of arms crown.

Vila Real de Santo António Commune had 10 542 inhabitants in 2001 and
covers 8,95 km². It is interesting that neither the municpal nor the
communal arms bear any reference to St. Anthony of Lisbon and Padova, the
namesake and patron of the city.
