It is a fairly typical portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centered on a background quartered (town rank) white and red. Flag and arms adopted and published in the official journal Diário da República : III Série in 2004.10.11.

The arms are Azure on a base Argent wavy charged with a fess wavy Vert a local fishing sloop Gules emphasised Or and dresses Argent and in chief a sun Or. Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "Monte Gordo".

Escudo de azul, canoa de pesca típica de vermelho, realçada de ouro, vestida de prata e vogante em campanha diminuta ondada de prata e verde de três peças; em chefe, sol de ouro. Coroa mural de prata de quatro torres. Listel branco, com a legenda a negro: "MONTE GORDO".

The settlement which is the seat and nameske of this commune used to be a village, and was upgraded to town status in 2001, after its coat of arms and flag was fisrt adopted. The 2004 law issued the trivial changes — the previous flag was plain white, with a three-towered coat of arms crown.

The arms are Vert an obelisk Or between a chameleon Argent in dexter and a tunna fish hauriant Argent at sinister and in base a fess wavy Azure charged with a barrulet wavy Argent. Mural crown argent with three visible towers (commune rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "Freguesia de Vila Real de Santo António":

Armas - Escudo de verde, obelisco de ouro entre um camaleão de prata e um atum do mesmo, posto em pala; contra-chefe diminuto ondeado, de prata e azul de três tiras. Coroa mural de prata de três torres. Listel branco, com a legenda a negro: "FREGUESIA DE VILA REAL DE SANTO ANTÓNIO".

Vila Real de Santo António Commune had 10 542 inhabitants in 2001 and covers 8,95 km². It is interesting that neither the municpal nor the communal arms bear any reference to St. Anthony of Lisbon and Padova, the namesake and patron of the city.
