About the Flag

It is a fairly typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a white and blue gyronny (city rank) field.

The arms are Vert issuant from a base wavy Argent and Azure a two-towered suspension bridge Argent with port and windows Sable and in chief a cogwheel Or surrounded by two bundles of rye Or of four ears each tied Argent. Mural crown Argent with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "TROFA".
Meaning:
"Trofa" comes from Arabic for "frontier", wich is not depicted in the arms. These in turn show the local suspension bridge.

Presentation of Trofa

Trofa municipality had 37 581 inhabitants in 2001, and it consists of five communes, covering 71,73 km². It is part of Porto District, traditional province Douro Litoral, and 1999 ref. adm. region Entre-Douro-e-Minho, C.C.R. / NUTS II Norte, and NUTS III Ave.

Municipality of Santo Tirso had recently it’s western half made the new municipality of Trofa. In 1999 Trofa Municipality was created from eight communes detached from Santo Tirso Municipality; since the scroll includes the name of the municipality this commune belongs to (added to disambiguate with another Alvarelhos Commune in Valpaços Municipality), it was changed to spell.
