About the flag

It is a fairily typical portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centered on a plain red background. Flag and arms adopted and published in the official journal Diário do Governo : I Série in 1935.12.17.

The arms are Argent on a mound Sable charged with a wavy fess Azure on a wavy fess Argent a castle Gules under an escutcheon Azure charged with 13 plates set 2+3+2+3+2+1 (old quina) held by two lions Gules affronty each standing on a slope of the said mound. Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters scroll reading in black upper case letters "VILA DE MELGAÇO".

Presentation of Melgaço

Melgaço is the northernmost portuguese municipality. It had 9996 inhabitants in 2001, and it consists of 18 communes, covering 239,04 km². It is part of Viana do Castelo District, traditional province Minho, 1999 ref. adm. region Entre Douro e Minho, C.C.R. / NUTS II Norte, and NUTS III Minho-Lima.

It is a fairly typical portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centered on a plain yellow background. The banner should have golden and red tassels and cord, and golden pole and spear finial. The author of the arms (and flag) is Carlos Alberto Mouteira Fernandes. Flag and arms adopted and published in the official journal Diário da República : III Série in 2003.03.12.

The arms are Gules two rye ears Or crossed per saltire flanking a fleur de lis Or offset to the chief and flanked by two cogwheels Argent and on a base wavy Argent a fess wavy Azure. Mural crown argent with three visible towers (commune rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "Gave - Melgaço". Original blazon:

Armas - Escudo de vermelho, duas espigas de centeio de ouro, passadas em aspa, entre flor-de-lis de ouro, em chefe e duas rodas dentadas de prata, nos flancos; campanha diminuta ondada de prata e azul de três tiras. Coroa mural de prata de três torres. Listel branco, com a legenda em maiúsculas a negro: "GAVE - MELGAÇO".
