It is a fairly typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field gyronny (meaning city rank) of green and white.

The coat of arms is sable a bridge of seven arches argent issuant from a base wavy of five fesses azure and argent below a closed castle of the same with port and windows gules and masoned sable surrounded by a laurel wreath proper tied gules. Mural crown argent with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "CIDADE DE MIRANDELA". Collar of the Order of Tower and Sword.

Mirandela municipality had 25 809 inhabitants in 2000 (24 640 in 1990), and it is divided in 30 communes, covering 679 km². It belongs to the Bragança District and to the old province of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro.
