It is a quite typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a background quarterly (meaning town rank) of yellow and blue.

The coat of arms is sable on a bend wavy azure fimbriated argent between six ears of maize corn three fish hauriant argent. Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "VILA DE ESTARREJA".

Meaning:
The arms were adopted and published in the official journal Diário do Governo : I Série in 1936.01.17 and celebrate local agriculture and fishing; local river is Antuã, but the municipality lies in the Aveiro lagoon with many tidal streams. (Meanwhile, the area was industrially "developed" and the arms may symbolize dead fish bobbing in a polluted river.)

Estarreja municipality had 28 279 inhabitants in 2000 and it is divided in 5 communes, covering 108,4 km². It belongs to: Aveiro District, traditional province Beira Litoral, C.C.R./NUT2 and 1999 ref. adm. region Centro.
