Coat of arms

[Vila Nova da Baronia commune CoA] image by Sérgio Horta, 5 Dec 2007

The arms are Gules a baron coronet flanked by a handful of wheat ears Or at dexter and a branch of cork oak Or at sinister, in chief a rail profile Argent. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "VILA NOVA DE BARONIA".
Meaning:
The town crown was granted because Vila Nova da Baronia was in 1280-1836 a standalone municipality. (This is not strictly according to the relevant law but has been the common practice of the heraldry authority.) "Vila nova da baronia" means something like "new town in the barony", refering to the title of Barão do Alvito, making these arms partly canting; unfortunately a variant of the Baron's arms was not adopted instead. Also canting is the rail in chief, as a "major" railroad depot is located in the commune. (The only really major thing about railroads in Portugal is unfortunately the beeching axe of the 1980ies.)
António Martins-Tuválkin, 5 Dec 2007

Flag and arms adopted and published in the official journal Diário da República: III Série in 1995.02.10.
