Sobreda Commune is one of the eleven communes of the
Almada Municipality; it had 10 821 inhabitants

"Sobreda" is a cognate of "sobro", old Portuguese for "cork",
which shows the cork oak in the arms as a canting element.

Cacilhas Commune is one of the eleven communes of
Almada Municipality; it had 6970 inhabitants in 2001
and covers 0,97 km². This former village, now a part of Almada city
(and as such of the Greater Lisbon conurbation), has
had and still has logistic importance being the best local harbour
linking Lisbon to the southern bank of the Tagus
(everywhere else being either too steep or too far) — the lighthouse
on the arms is connected to that fact; the hand adzes may stand for the local
shibuilding industry
(here’s
a hand adze in current use) — Cacilhas having been a housing site for workers
of the Lisnave shipyard.
