The symbols of Martijanec are prescribed by Decision Odluka o opisu i uporabi grba i zastave Općine Donji Martijanec, adopted on 24 November 1997 by the Municipality Assembly and never published in any official gazette.
The symbols are described in the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Martijanec, adopted on 18 March 2013 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 19 March 2013 in the County official gazette Službeni vjesnik Varaždinske županije, No. 10 (text).

The flag is described in the Decision as "coloured yellow, in its centre is the coat of arms of the municipality. The ratio of width to length of the flag is 1:2."

The coat of arms of Martijanec is described in Article 5 of the Statutes as follows:

In a shield shape, in the semi-circular bottom of it is in the opposite direction shown a semi-circular motif coloured green, and above it on the red background there is a white bishop's tiara [mitre] with a bendwise set sword behind it.

The Decision states that "the red field symbolizes the cloak of St. Martin, who according to the legend cut it in half and shared it with a beggar". It is further stated that the green mound stands for "the site named 'Gomila', being a large iron-age tumulus [barrow] (most probably a princely grave with urn burial), the largest from a group of tumili in north-western Croatia, which is interwoven with a series of folk tales and histories".

The ceremonial flag in use (photo) superseded a flag presribed in the Decision as "retaining the ratio and elements of the official flag, but the fly ending in the swallow-tail form, characteristic for the old flags of Pannonian Croatia, also in the ceremonial variant the coat of arms is set perpendicularly to the shorter side of the flag".
