The municipality of Sunja (7,376 inhabitans in 2001, 1,397 in the village of Sunja) is located some 20 km south-east from Sisak, on the right bank of river Sava - actually on river Sunja that from that point flows in parallel with Sava for another 20 or so km.

The symbols of Sunja are prescribed by Decision Odluka o odabiru motiva za izradu idejnog rješenja grba i zastave Općine Sunja, adopted on 12 November 2002 by the Municipality Council and published on 13 November 2002 in the official gazette Službeni vjesnik, No. 21.
Decision Odluka o mjerilima za uproabu grba i zastave Općine Sunja, adopted on 18 May 2004 by the Municipality Council and published on 19 May 2004 in Službeni vjesnik, No. 18, repeats the description of the coat of arms and the flag from the 2002 Decision, but not of the ceremonial flag (which is not unusual). It invalidates the previous Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Sunja, published in 1995 in Službeni vjesnik, No. 17. This means that before the currents symbols an other set of symbols was used, even if probably not approved by the Ministry of Administration.
The Decision was amdended as Odluka o izmjenama i dopunama Odluke o mjerilima za uporabu grba i zastave Općine Sunja, adopted on 5 June 2012 and published on 8 June 2012 in Službeni vjesnik, No. 19 (text); the changes deal with responsibilities in the process of grant of use for commercial use of the symbols.
The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company from Rijeka.
The flag is yellow with the coat of arms in the middle.
