The symbols of Crikvenica are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Crikvenice, adopted on 3 August 1995 by the Town Assembly and published on 10 May 1996 in the County official gazette Službene novine Primorsko-goranske županije, No. 12. The Decision prescribes that it shall be published in the gazette after the Ministry approves the design, which happened only in May 1996.
Decision Odluka o uvjetima uporabe grba i zastave Grada Crikvenice, adopted on 3 August 1998 by the Town Assembly and published on 21 August 1998 in Službene novine Primorsko-goranske županije, No. 17, elaborates on conditions of use of the town symbols and the procedure for their commercial exploitation.

The Town Statutes Statut Grada Crikvenice, adopted on 11 October 2001 by the Town Assembly and published on 26 October 2001 in Službene novine Primorsko-goranske županije, No. 26, describe the symbol in Article 4. So do the current Statutes Statut Grada Crikvenice, adopted on 14 July 2009 by the Town Assembly and published on 15 July 2009 in Službene novine Primorsko-goranske županije, No. 26.

The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka

The flag is in proportions 1:2, yellow with the coat of arms in the middle.

The coat of arms is blue with a house over a bridge with an embattled tower to the right and a bell-tower to the left all argent, from which is issuing a golden palm tree.
The coat of arms shows the Frankapan Tower, within the complex of the Crikvenica castle - the Pauline monastery established by the Frankapan in 1412. The monastery and church, which provided the name for Crikvenica, developed from cr(i)kva, "a church".

Before the adoption of the current symbols, Crikvenica adopted its first "coat of arms" during the Socialist period in 1978, designed by Pero Čimbur, a productive designer of numerous municipal arms in the late Yugoslav period. The coat of arms (emblem) is typical of the style of the period, remote from traditional heraldry: in a light blue shield a gray tower between two white sails ensigned with a green tree above a gray bridge with tree arches over a blue river and in base a brown ship affronty its top in chevron inverted edged green its oar holes gules and in the chief a red five-pointed star. The ship's oar holes forms letter "C" for Crikvenica, the bridge is that over stream Dubracina near which the Frankapan Tower was erected in the 15th century. It is set between two "sails" representing the two other towns at the time being parts of the municipality, territorially larger than the current Town, Novi Vinodolski and Selca and the trees represent the forest laying in the hinterland.
The designing process of the coat of arms is described vividly by the author in his book Natjecanje za grb [cim85].
