The municipality of Cephalonia (35,801 inhabitants in 2011; 78,100 ha) was formed in the 2011 local government reform by the merger of the former municipalities of Argostoli (12,589 inh.), Paliki (Παλική, 7,836 inh.), Sami (Σάμη, 2,895 inh.), Erisos (Έρισος, 1,963 inh.), Eleios-Pronnoi (Ελειός-Πρόννοι, 3,840 inh.), Leivathos (Λειβαθώ, 4,663 inh.), Omala (Ομαλά, 1,053 inh.) and Pylaros (Πύλαρος, 1,565 inh.).

Argostoli has been the capital and administrative centre of Cephalonia since 1757.
The flag of the former municipality of Argostoli was white with its emblem, the name of the municipality above in a semi-circle, and the
name of the island beneath (Kokkonis website).
