The municipality of Abdera (19,005 inhabitants in 2011; 31,480 ha) was formed in the 2011 local government reform by the merger of the three former municipalities of Abdera (3,341 inh.), Selero (Σέλερο, 4,509 inh.), and Vistonida (Βιστωνίδα, 10,147 inh.).

The municipality of Abdera adopted a new emblem (image) in February 2012.
According to the source, the previous emblem, adopted in 1999, showed a rosette coming from the Byzantine acropolis in Abdera, on which could be seen a portrait of the famous philosoph Democritus, who was a citizen of Abdera, and a griffin, which was the emblem of the ancient city and which protected the secrets of sea embracing the municipality.

The new emblem depicts the center of a ionic column, on the left Democritus, on the right a carnivorous horse of Diomedes, and below a wave and a green leaf. The emblem represents the classical past, history and thought of the philosophers of Abdera, the momentum of the man-eating horses of Diomedes, the lakes and seas of the municipality, the tobacco and celery from the region for its rural economy. This source states that the new emblem waited for approval by the Ministy of the Interior. Maybe it still waits for approval, since the former emblem of the former municipality of Abdera is still in use on the new municipality's website.

The flag with the 1999 emblem is very light pink with the former municipal emblem in the center (Kokkonis website).
