Description

La Orotava, in the hinterland nearby Puerto de la Cruz, has a white flag with the coat-of-arms in the centre, about a half of the flag's height.

Santiago Dotor, 03 May 2000

I spotted this flag four times on top of the roof of a super market centre between La Orotava and Puerto de la Cruz on 17 February 2010. The coat of arms’ total height was at least 80% of the height of flag.

In the centre of a golden (yellow) field stands a tree in leafy green. The shield is topped by a coronet and has a red border with one golden (yellow) apple on each side. Two green dragons with batwings and barbed tails are the shield's supporters.

Not only the shield but also the border and the supporters refer to the legend of the garden of the Hesperides, in which there stood the tree with the golden apples, which were stolen by ancient hero Hercules. The garden was watched by a never-sleeping dragon.
