The municipality of Duruelo de la Sierra (1,322 inhabitants in 2010; 4,484 ha; municipal website) is located in the northwest of the Soria Province, on the border with the Burgos Province and La Rioja, 60 km from Soria.
Duruelo means "small Duero", referring to river Duero that takes its
source on the municipal territory; accordingly, Duruelo and Porto,
located at the mouth of Douro, twinned in 1989. "de la Sierra" refers
to the Sierra de Urbión range, which peaks on the municipal territory at
Pico de Urbión (2,229 m, also the highest point of the Soria Province).
Mozarab colonists were the first historical settlers of Duruelo, as
evidenced by a necropolis (9th-12th centuries) and three Muslim arches
(10th century) in the parish church. Subsequently deserted, the area
was resettled in the 13th century by the Soria Council on behalf of
King Ferdinand III the Saint; the charter prescribing the limits of the
village and the rivers, pastures and properties allocated to the
settlers is kept in the Municipal Archives. The rights of the
villagers were confirmed by several kings, from Sancho IV to Philip II.
The 1,747 pines located on the municipal territory are randomly
allocated every year, an old privilege that was last confirmed on 16
September 1901. Timber wood is used to produce pieces of furniture by
the COMAR company, cooperatively managed by the villagers.

The flag of Duruelo de la Sierra, approved by the Royal Academy of
History, is prescribed by a Decree adopted on 5 April 1993 by the
Soria Provincial Government, signed
on 4 July 1996 by the President of the Government, and published on 16 July 1996 in the official gazette
of Castile and León, No. 136 (text).
The flag is described
as follows:
