Presentation of Saelices el Chico

The municipality of Saelices el Chico (163 inhabitants in 2010; 4,555 ha) is located in the west of Salamanca Province, 100 km from Salamanca.

Saelices el Chico was probably named for Child (chico) St. Felix (Sancti Felicis). The village was the site of the last uranium mine in Spain, operated in 1974-2000 by the national company "Empresa Nacional del Uranio" (Enusa, website). The mine was closed on 31 December 2000, while the "Quercus" uranium concentrates manufacturing plant was shut down in 2003, being used today only for the treatment of liquid effluents. The older "Elefante" plant was dismantled in 2001-2004. The environmental recovery project is the largest ever undertaken in Spain and the most important in the European Union, with a budget of 70 million euros and completion expected in 2010.
